DIAMONDS
Diamond is the brightest, rarest and hardest precious stone, which makes him most desirable when choosing jewellery. It can be said that every piece of diamond in the world is special, because two diamonds may differ in almost unlimited number of details. The fundamental differences on which the beauty and the value of the diamonds depend are so called 4Cs: 1. C-CUT 2. C-CARAT 3. C-CLARITY 4. C-COLOUR These are the main features based on which the quality of precious stones is assessed. Jewellers use the term “diamond cutting” when they want to describe dimension, symmetry and facet number of an individual stone, and a form in which the diamond was cut. There are various forms of the stone cuts: brilliant, princess, baguette, marquise, oval, emerald and heart-shape. However, standard diamond cutting refers to the brilliant form, that is, a diamond round cut with 58 facets (layers) distributed along the crown, girdle and the stone’s base. In such a manner the diamond reflects light and obtains extreme lustre and glare. The colour of precious stones is very important because, apart from their lustre, the colour is what attracts attention of watchers most. The whiter the diamond is the more appreciated it is. The colours are graded from D to Z (according to the GIA- Gemological Institute of America). The colour closer to the end of the alphabet refers to the diamonds of poorer colour, yellow and grey. The diamonds are the only stones whose value increases with their colourlessness. There are also so-called “fancy” diamonds, which are of pink, yellow, brown and black colour. Pink diamond is extremely rare and its value reaches the dizzying prices exceeding US$ 200,000 per carat. The stone purity is measured with the quantity of inclusions (carbon, air bubbles) it contains, and whether these inclusions are visible to the naked eye or under the magnifying glass. The spots on which they located are also important. There is a stone purity scale, which is as follows: - IF Internally Flawless (no inclusions) - VVS1 and VVS2 Very, Very Slightly Included (visible only more than 10X magnification) - VS1 and VS2 Very Slightly Included - SI1 and SI2 Slightly Included (visible under 10X magnification) - P1,P2,P3 Included –inclusion visible to the naked eye In assessing the diamond value, its size or weight is very important. The weight is measured in carats. Finally, the value and the price of a diamond will depend on all of its features as listed above. Huge diamonds should have certificates issued by the world recognised gemological institutes, such as GIA and IGI. Apart from the diamonds, precious stones also include the SAPPHIRE – blue, EMERALD-green and RUBY – red stones. The most beautiful, of the best quality and most expensive emerald is the Colombian Emerald, having most intensive and most beautiful colour, while the most valuable and the most beautiful ruby is the Burma Ruby whose colour resembles the pigeon’s blood and is called accordingly. As for sapphires, apart from the blue ones, there are green, pink, yellow and orange sapphires. Apart from these four gemstones, we also have some other exceptionally beautiful stones which, owing to their beauty and rarity, are used for making jewellery. They are classified into the category of semi-precious stones, and some of them are as follows: AMETHYST - violet; PERIDOT- green, TOURMALINE - pink, green and brown, TOPAZ – yellow and blue, QUARTZ – pink, brown and white, AQUAMARINE – light blue, ONYX - black, GARNET- dark red and green, MOONSTONE – grey, white and orange, RHODOLITE - red, CITRINE - orange, AGATHA - white, ROCK CRISTAL – transparent white.
